The director attempts to give a play like feel to this tale on a couple and their forbidden attraction for other people in conversation drama ‘Last Night’. Joanna (
Keira Knightley) suspects her husband Michael (
Sam Worthington) may be attracted to his co-worker Laura (
Eva Mendes) after she spots the two eyeing each other at a party. Michael denies the allegation and goes on a business trip with Laura.
Preoccupied with thoughts on her uninspiring marriage while the husband is away, Joanna bumps into her ex boyfriend Alex (
Guillaume Canet) at a café. The two get along like a house on fire and decide to spend the day together for old time sakes.
Is Joanna right about Michael & Laura? Did Joanna make a right decision by marrying Michael when she feels only Alex can uplift her when she’s in a sad state?
Last Night aspires to be a thought provoking drama about the complexities of a relationship. It brings to forefront all the doubts that one often has about a relationship especially when it’s facing rough weather. Is the partner, to be blamed when you too are equally uninvolved emotionally?
The premise of the film seems interesting but the banal writing and feeble performances ensures total boredom to the viewer instead.
Sam Worthington seems to have ‘Terminated’ his prowess to express after doing the sci-fi genre in which ‘being stoic’ is considered as a skill. He simply stares at his co-stars when attracted, unhappy/happy, aroused, apologetic etc! If only staring was acting.
Eva Mendes has no role to play. The film revolves around Joanna to be precise and Keira Knightley does justice to her character. French heartthrob Guillaume Canet stands out and provides that much needed charm and life to the otherwise never-ending film.
The film is not made to offer solutions but ask questions. However, nothing seems interesting enough to be thought about…Neither the marriage, nor the adultery. The four characters talk incessantly about their past, present, regrets… but the conversation fails to hold your interest and you just wish they all do what they want to and just get done with it.
Theres’s enough to think about in real life, why waste time over the melancholic Last Night!
