At 16, Justin Bieber is a huge teen pop sensation. When his debut single, One Time, released worldwide in 2009, it charted within the Top 30 in over 10 countries. It was followed by his debut release, My World. That was certified platinum in the United States. It made him the first artiste to have seven songs from a debut album chart on the Billboard Hot 100. His first full studio release, My World 2.0, was released in 2010.
It debuted at No. 1 and was within the Top 10 of several countries. Recent reports say that the Canadian pop R&B
singer is the most searched person on the Internet. He is searched three times more than David Beckham and 29 times more than US President Barack Obama! While boys write his name on their foreheads, girls are happy swooning over his big brown eyes and the mop of perfectly blow-dried and swept hair. Excerpts from an e-mail interview with Justin Bieber: You’ve been brought up by your mother single-handedly. What’s it that you’ve inherited from your father?Although my mom raised me single-handedly, I have a great relationship with my dad. When I was younger, he taught me how to play some songs on the guitar, like Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan. He’s the one who got me into classic rock and then turned me on to stuff like Guns N’ Roses and
Metallica. He taught me how to drive too. He’s cool.
It’s been said that your mom loves to control you. How much of truth is there to such stories?I am not affected by such stories at all. I am very close to my mom.
Crowd control has become a serious problem for your shows after you’ve become a teenage heartthrob. While no one would want their fans to be injured, do you somewhere secretly enjoy when cops have to cancel your shows fearing stampede?Well, I enjoy touring and we worked very hard for our shows. We’ve got dancers and many other artistes with us for every show. Cancellation is a huge upset for all of us. I don’t like to disappoint my fans.
You are often called the self-styled Internet sensation. How much of your popularity do you owe to the Internet and to your marketing team?Initially when everyone talked about Twitter, I was like “Twitter. What’s Twitter?” But then I slowly started using it and now I really like it because I’m able to connect with my fans. Internet is now bigger than ever. I think it’s a great platform to interact and connect with people. So, I make the most of it.
The walls of your room are supposedly plastered with posters of Beyoncé and it broke your heart when Beyoncé married Jay-Z. How does it feel to be a fan when millions are a fan of yours?Beyoncé is awesome. I need to do a song with her.

How was the experience of shooting the video of Never Say Never with Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith? Who do you think is a better dancer — Jaden or you?(Laughs) Jaden is a very good dancer, definitely. During the making of the video, Jaden and I have had a very good time. We’d often compete. He’d show me different dance moves and styles. I’ve tried those moves. But, yes, he definitely is a great dancer.
K’Naan says that Wavin’ Flag had started out to be his song and has now become everyone’s song, what with you and many other Canadian artistes performing it for the Haiti victims. Is there any song of yours that can one day become an anthem like Wavin’ Flag?I have just started my career and will have many more songs. So, let’s see.
You’ve performed for President Barack Obama at the White House. You have been a presenter at the 52nd Grammy Awards. You have sung the opening line of the remake of We Are the World. If you had to choose only one among these experiences, which would have opted for and why? They have been the best experiences till now, so it is very difficult to choose.
