‘The Hunger Games’ fans have a big reason to get excited. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are officially set to return in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the upcoming prequel film based on Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel. The movie is scheduled to release in November 2026, and the news has already created major buzz online.
The new movie focuses on Haymitch, not Katniss and Peeta
This film takes the story back in time. It follows Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. That means the events happen 24 years before Katniss’ story begins. Fans already know Haymitch wins these Games, because he later becomes a mentor in the original series.
But this prequel explores more than just the arena. It also shows Haymitch’s life before and after the Games. It reveals what happened to other tributes too. So the main focus stays on Haymitch’s journey and trauma, not on Katniss or Peeta.
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are returning
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson played Katniss and Peeta in the first four films. Their story ended in 2015 with ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’. Since then, the franchise has only explored prequel stories. So seeing them again feels special.
In Collins’ 2025 book, Katniss and Peeta appear in an epilogue set after ‘Mockingjay’.
All three characters live in District 12’s Victor’s Village. The epilogue shows Haymitch finally opening up to them about his past, including his family, the people he lost, and Lenore Dove.
Their roles will likely be short
Even though the return sounds huge, fans should stay realistic. The epilogue is not very long. That means Katniss and Peeta will probably have small roles. Most likely, they will appear as cameos. Unless director Francis Lawrence adds something new that is not in the book.
