Helen Mirren visits Jerusalem during mass protests against the government; cites ex-Israeli prime minister Golda Meir as her inspiration

Helen Mirren, the 77-year-old veteran British actress who has won multiple American and British awards that includes the Triple Crowns of Acting in both countries recently visited Jerusalem for her brand new film, Golda, which is based on the former Israeli prime minister, Golda Meir, who served as the fourth prime minister of Israel for five years from 1969 to 1974.She was also Israel’s first and only female head of government and the first and only female head of government in the Middle East.
Helen admitted that she was very inspired by the story of Golda Meir and that is why she chose to do the role. Helen was recently honored at the Israeli Film Festival in Jerusalem. The film is directed by Guy Nattiv, the Israeli filmmaker who introduced Helen at the festival as a, “true mensch” He added, “We are honored you played Golda, and thank you so much for who you are, thank you for coming here.”
The current situation in Israel is turbulent as the country is going through mass protests against the right-wing leader Netanyahu, who seeks to completely overhaul the country’s judicial system which the opposition and sections of the public feel is a violation of human rights and democracy and an attempt to gain authoritarian control over the country.
However, Helen is inspired by the protests as the current government is known to be ultra-nationalist and ultra-orthodox with allies of the same nature. She stated, “I’m personally very moved and excited when you see these huge demonstrations, I think it’s a pivotal moment in Israeli history.”
