DC fans have a lot to look forward to with the new slate of films and TV series gearing up to hit the big screens. Besides 'Joker 2' set to release this weekend and the ongoing 'The Penguin' series, new reports suggest that the next iconic villains to take the spotlight will be Bane and Deathstroke.
The two villains, introduced in the Dark Knight and Suicide Squad movies, are reportedly set to star in an upcoming movie currently in early development. The film is being developed by Matthew Orton, the screenwriter behind Captain America: Brave New World, though no director has yet been attached to the project.
Bane, one of DC Comics’ most infamous villains, was last seen on screen in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, where he was portrayed by Tom Hardy as the masked antagonist. Deathstroke, another key villain in the DC Universe, appeared in numerous video games and animated series, with live-action portrayals by Esai Morales in the Titans series and Joe Manganiello in Zack Snyder's DC films.
At one point, Deathstroke was set to be the main antagonist in Ben Affleck's planned solo Batman film, though the project never came to fruition. There was also talk of a Gareth Evans-directed solo Deathstroke film, which ultimately failed to get the green light.
DC Studios co-heads
James Gunn and
Peter Safran have found success with villain-focused projects in recent years. 2019’s Joker was a box office sensation, grossing over $1 billion and earning Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for Best Actor, while director Todd Phillips received multiple nominations for Best Picture. The highly anticipated sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, is scheduled for release on October 2, 2024.
