Jason Momoa wraps up his time as Aquaman, he's eyeing a potential new gig in the DC Universe. With no sequel plans for ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ in the works, it seems the DCEU timeline might conclude with this upcoming release. In a recent interview with Fandango alongside co-star Patrick Wilson, Momoa discussed the prospect of playing Lobo, a character he has shown interest in before.
Momoa revealed that he initially believed he was auditioning for the role of Lobo when approached for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He recalled feeling skeptical about auditioning for Batman but went ahead with it, assuming he'd be cast as the bad guy. However, his expectations were dashed when he discovered he was actually being considered for Aquaman. "I got called in the office, and that was just like, 'Well, do you know who you're going to play?' I'm like, 'Yeah, Lobo! Of course. He's the only one who can fight Batman and Superman.' [Director Zack Snyder was] like, 'What? Lobo? No, he's not in this universe.' I'm like, 'What? Who the hell am I supposed to play?' And then, I wish he would've taped it, because he's like, 'Aquaman.'
And I'm like [disappointed face]." Momoa explained.
Despite his initial disappointment, Momoa warmed up to the vision for Aquaman, particularly appreciating the character's renegade and traveler qualities. The film turned out to be a massive success, but Momoa couldn't shake his desire to portray Lobo. He expressed his passion for the character, stating, "So Lobo was... I collect comics, and I don't do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I'm like, 'Hello? It's the perfect role."
While Momoa has yet to receive a call about playing Lobo, he made it clear that if the opportunity arises, he's all in. " I haven't received that call, so I don't want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I'm there." Fans can catch Momoa in what might be his final appearance as Aquaman when ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ hits theaters on December 22, 2023.
