International Harry Potter Day | Magic in the making: Bring Hogwarts home this weekend
DIY your way into Hogwarts
How about planning a Harry Potter-themed house party this weekend? Start with coffee-stained acceptance letters to invite guests. Add DIY potion jars, floating candles and handmade wands to build the mood. “Craft your props using cloth, thermocol, plastic or resin, while some can be bought to complete the look,” says Deepak Chauhan, founder of Delight Balloons Event Planner. Focus on atmosphere, as Nabomalikaa Gupta, who is a communication professional suggests: “It is about creating an immersive experience, with soft lighting, scented candles, and small elements like miniature making or potion corners.” Add interactive elements: “A Harry Potter-themed DIY party works best when it feels like stepping into a story, with wand-making stations and treasure hunts,” says Diksha Agarwal, founder of Your DIY Studio. Keep it simple, adds Rivu Bhattacharya, co-founder of Idiot Alien Events: “You don’t need expensive materials; it’s about enjoying the process.”
A Harry Potter-themed DIY party should feel like stepping into a story, simple activities like wand-making and potion mixing make it immersive
All you need for Harry Potter day
- DIY wands, letters and potion jars
- Butterbeer or themed drinks n A simple Hogwarts style meal
- Treasure hunt or role-play games
- Miniature or craft activity n Movie marathon setup
Marauder’s Map in motion
While house parties remain popular, many fans are taking the magic outdoors with treasure hunts and clue trails that turn neighbourhoods into playful wizarding routes. “The real magic lies in activities; treasure hunts and role-play games make the experience immersive without elaborate setups,” says Diksha. “Guests can be divided into houses, with clues leading to a Golden Snitch,” adds Misa Haldar, a college student. For Rayan Ray, a Potterhead, it’s also about nostalgia and personal meaning: “Collectibles carry stories; the point is to enjoy them, not just preserve them over time and across memories.”
A feast worthy of the Great Hall
Food is where the nostalgia comes alive, with a simple spread that can remind any Potterhead of the Great Hall. “The menu should mirror a Hogwarts-style feast, with butterbeer-inspired mocktails, pumpkin pasties, and simple dishes like roasted chicken,” says Nabomalikaa. Place the iconic Happee Birthdae Harry cake at the centre of your dining table. “I was really excited to prepare the Harry Potter cake. It reminded me of my childhood when I watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone; baking it brought back memories,” says Sreyashi Dey, founder of SeaSalt Patisserie. “The cherry on top would be to ask your guests to come dressed as Harry Potter characters,” says Misa Haldar, a college student. For quieter plans like Ankita Barat’s, simply light a themed candle and enjoy a movie marathon.
Our generation grew up with Harry Potter, so creating miniatures like potion bottles and broomsticks sound exciting. It’s about making tiny things and bringing that magic into everyday life
