When celebrity feuds revealed the ugly side of showbiz

The perennial allure of celebrity feuds is a tantalizing subject that captivates audiences perhaps even more than heartwarming love stories between stars. In the realm of entertainment and especially in Tollywood, the Bengali film industry, these conflicts have surged in the recent past, ensnaring some of the most notable figures. These disputes range from simmering disagreements on sets and bitter fights on social media to fully-fledged public spectacles, underscoring the volatile mix of ego, competition, and sometimes even hypocrisy within the industry.

Celebs and their adorably ‘pawsome’ moments

2/7

Swastika Mukherjee – Sreelekha Mitra

Among the most publicized of these feuds was that between actresses Swastika Mukherjee and Sreelekha Mitra. The genesis of this particular conflict lay in Sreelekha's public lament about nepotism, where she revealed that she had lost numerous leading roles due to industry favoritism. Swastika, without explicitly naming anyone, took to Facebook to pen a rebuttal. Swastika’s counter was tinged with sarcasm as she questioned the prevalent belief that actresses who work multiple times with the same director must be involved in an inappropriate relationship with them. To reinforce her argument, she cited examples of male actors and crew members who have also collaborated multiple times with the same directors, implicitly asking if the same derogatory assumptions should be applied to them. The insinuation here was clear: if such a ‘rule’ exists, it should be applied uniformly, regardless of gender. Swastika’s critique addressed the double standards and sexism within the industry, culminating in her explosive comment on ‘slut-shaming’ actresses who supposedly can't act.

3/7

Rupanjana Mitra – Arindam Sil.

Around 2020 came the #MeToo movement, and it hit the Bengali film industry as well. Actor Rupanjana Mitra ignited a storm by leveling allegations of sexual misconduct against celebrated filmmaker Arindam Sil. According to Rupanjana, Sil had behaved improperly during a script-reading session in his Kolkata office. Though Sil categorically denied the allegations, the public exchange of statements between the two carried on, eliciting mixed reactions from the industry and audiences alike.

4/7

Prosenjit Chatterjee – Rituparna Sengupta.

Not all feuds stem from grave issues like sexism or sexual misconduct. Some are rooted in personal differences, like the one between Prosenjit Chatterjee and Rituparna Sengupta. In the 1990s, this duo was considered Tollywood royalty, as their on-screen chemistry drew immense adoration from fans. Despite persistent rumors about their alleged romantic involvement, the duo managed to keep their personal lives private. However, after their 2002 film ‘Streer Maryada’, the pair split for reasons unknown, only to rekindle their professional relationship 15 years later with ‘Praktan’, which was well-received.

5/7

Sreelekha Mitra – Prosenjit Chatterjee

Another strand of the nepotism conversation reemerged when Sreelekha Mitra, in a separate incident, called out Prosenjit Chatterjee in 2020. In a YouTube video, she alleged that her career had been thwarted because Prosenjit and Rituparna were in a relationship during the 90s and early 2000s. According to Sreelekha, she was often relegated to secondary roles despite having the potential to be a leading lady.

6/7

Trina Saha - Sohini Sarkar

Lastly, there was the disagreement between Trina Saha and Sohini Sarkar. Originating on the sets of the web series 'Matangi,' the tension escalated when Sohini allegedly sent a veiled insult directed at Trina via a WhatsApp group chat for artists. Refusing to apologize, Sohini pushed Trina to a point where she opted to leave the project altogether, feeling maligned by one-sided media coverage.

7/7

The dark side of showbiz

Celebrity feuds often serve as a microcosm of broader societal and industry issues, be it sexism, power dynamics, or personal vendettas. They captivate us because they lay bare the imperfections and struggles that exist even in the glamour-filled world of fame, providing a more rounded, albeit at times unsettling, view of the celebrities we think we know. While these conflicts may serve as guilty pleasures for some audiences, they also carry the potential to spark critical dialogues on pertinent issues. Whether one relishes these episodes of discord or disapproves of them, there's no denying that they hold a distinct space in the public's imagination.
