Senior actor credits Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher as the master of ‘comic timing’
Comedy is a universal language that has the power to make us laugh, uplift our spirits, and provide a much-needed escape from the rigors of everyday life. However, behind every successful comedic performance lies a web of challenges that actors face while trying to pull off a comedy role. Kanchan Mallick, with his years of experience, knows it quite well. After a long gap, Kanchan was back in the news for his latest film ‘Tenida and Company. His comic timings and antiques made viewers go ROFL and this response and love feels the actor’s heart with warmth.
When ETimes got in touch with Kanchan, the actor shared with us the most difficult parts and challenges of embodying a comedic character and highlighted the intricate artistry required to deliver laughter.
According to Kanchan, one of the most crucial elements of comedy is timing, and acting powerhouses like Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher showed how to master the act. “It's the delicate dance between words, gestures, and reactions that can turn an ordinary line into a hilarious punchline. The comedy actor must possess impeccable timing, knowing exactly when to pause, when to deliver a joke, and when to let the punchline sink in. Balancing these nuances while maintaining a natural flow requires a keen sense of comedic rhythm and an innate understanding of the script,” explained the actor adding that Tenida's role has always been one of his favourites since early childhood because he has grown up reading about Tenida.
Unlike other acting genres, comedy demands precision and a heightened sense of exaggeration. “Actors must master the art of delivery, emphasizing the right words, employing physical comedy, and using facial expressions to enhance comedy effect. It's a delicate balance between being believable and entertaining, as the audience expects the actor to flawlessly execute the punchlines, gags, and witty comebacks,” he said. Almost after 26 years, Kanchan Mallick was spotted on a film poster, and for him, that was more than enough.
“Comedy often thrives on vulnerability, and actors must be willing to let go of their inhibitions. To truly connect with the audience and evoke laughter, actors must expose their innermost vulnerabilities and dive fearlessly into their characters. This requires shedding self-consciousness and embracing the risk of looking foolish,” the actor reveals adding, “It's a courageous act that demands the actor to fully commit, letting go of their ego and fear of judgment.”
Comedy is a fluid art form that thrives on interaction with the audience. Unlike film or television, where multiple takes and editing can enhance comedic timing, live performances present unique challenges. Kanchan believes, “Comedic actors must adapt to the energy of the audience, gauge their reactions, and adjust their delivery on the spot. This requires quick thinking, improvisational skills, and the ability to read the room, ensuring that each joke lands in the most effective way.”
He also stresses on continual innovation, “The art is ever-evolving, and comedic actors must stay current to resonate with contemporary audiences. They must constantly refine their craft, study comedic trends, and infuse their performances with fresh perspectives. It's a dynamic process that demands creativity, adaptability, and a willingness to push boundaries. Comedy actors who can successfully blend timeless comedic techniques with modern sensibilities stand the best chance of leaving a lasting impression.”
Behind the laughter and applause lies a tapestry of challenges that comedic actors face in their pursuit of entertaining audiences. From perfecting timing and delivery to embracing vulnerability and adapting to live audiences, these artists navigate a complex landscape of artistry and spontaneity. Kanchan insists that the mastery of these difficult aspects requires dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the craft.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Kanchan Mallick has one film and two web series in the pipeline.
