Ray comparison? I'm S**t scared

Sujoy Ghosh is all set to tell a different kahaani. Following in Satyajit Ray's footsteps, the filmmaker will be adapting Sunil Ganguly's Aranyer Din Ratri
Ray comparison? I'm S**t scared
Sujoy Ghosh, whose 'Kahaani' will hit the theatres on March 9, is ready to raise the bar with his next film. The director has bought the rights of Sunil Ganguly's Aranyer Din Ratri, the story of journey and rediscovery that Satyajit Ray had portrayed in his 1970 masterpiece.
The cast has not been finalized yet and Sujoy, who is very busy with 'Kahaani' and is currently in London, says that he has to live with the characters of the story for a while before he can take the plunge.

'Ami likhbo, bujhbo. I am not sure whether I'll place the story in that period, because our lives and times have changed. Even the current emotional battles are different. So, I will have to contemporize it. There is an element of mystery in the story and I feel it can be done like a thriller. But you know what the biggest problem is? Robi Ghosh,' he says, referring to the late actor, who had a crucial role in the Ray original.
Sujoy says that he's been hugely influenced by 'Aranyer Din Ratri', the film. 'I've copied it blatantly right from 'Jhankar Beats' to 'Kahaani'. And about the book, I am a huge Sunil Ganguly fan. He is the humblest person I've known. I think the story is about rediscovering oneself. I could see it happening before my eyes. My intention is to present Ray and Sunil to the modern audience. In any case, my generation probably knows them even better than I do,' he says.
Isn't he apprehensive about comparisons with Ray? 'Apprehensive is not the word. I am s**t scared. But let me clarify that I do not want to go anywhere near the original film. I am not competent. This is my version of Sunilda's story. As far as filmmaking is concerned, there is only one Bible and that goes by the name of Satyajit Ray,' Sujoy adds.
The director feels that his primary job is to tell a story. 'Generally, we write a story and then execute it. But that's not my job and I'm not a competent storywriter. There is a lot of literature available and I was looking for something to make a film on. That's how 'Aranyer Din Ratri' happened,' he says.
Author Sunil Ganguly confirms giving the rights to Sujoy. 'I kind of like him ' besh mojar chhele. I think it will be challenging for him. Ray has already made it once. It will be interesting to see how Sujoy goes about it. As far as suggestions are concerned, if he asks me, I will surely be there to help him,' the author says.
Arindam Sil, who has been part of 'Kahaani' and will also be part of this project, says, 'I have got the official letter from Sunilda, where he has given us the permission to make Aranyer Din Ratri in Hindi.'
