When a film is adapted from a text that has earlier been adapted on celluloid in another language, the director and actors are in a bit of dilemma. The problem here is whether to watch the original adaptation or not?
Dibakar Banerjee, who is adapting Greek author, Vassilis Vassilikos novel Z might also be faced with a similar dilemma. Should he have his actors from Shanghai Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Prosenjit Chatterjee watch Constantin Costas-Gavras 1969 Golden Globe and Oscar-winning French film that was based on Vassilikos novel? Ask Dibakar if he insists on his actors watching the film now that they are well into attending his workshops and the director says, I am fine with them watching it.
Even if they dont watch it, its okay by me. So, has he asked Prosenjit Chatterjee to watch Z? I think, I left the DVD of the film with him. However, I am not quite sure of it, Dibakar says.
Prosenjit says that he has watched Z earlier. Yes, I have watched the French film earlier. But, I will not watch it now. I dont wish to get influenced. Besides, there is a big change in the way Dibakar is adapting the movie and the French film, Prosenjit says.
