And I feel let down as an ordinary member of the audience. Ami lojjito ebong obak. I feel it is an instance of curtailing freedom of expression.”
While talking about the importance of political satire, she said, “A political satire becomes a social commentary keeping the entertainment quotient intact. The Great Dictator is my favourite political satire of all time. It is amazing how the film has depicted he socio-political turbulence of a particular time and yet has never appeared to be preachy. That is the charm of such films. We see it in Hirak Rajar Deshe too. But I like The Great Dictator better as a film.”
After releasing on Friday, Anik’s new film was taken off the theatre. The hall owners have said that the film was removed after instructions came from the authority. Incidentally, the film begins with a voiceover that mentions the difficulties faced while making and releasing it. However, the director insists that he never anticipated such a turn of events. “I never expected the film to be taken off the theatres. Some four-five days back, my producers had received a communication from the cops suggesting that there were some intelligence reports claiming that the content of my film might create law and order issues. But the cops had no jurisdiction to talk about my film or want to watch it before release,” Dutta alleged while pointing out that his film had a valid certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and could be released without seeking any other permission. “I think, the pressure created by the positive reactions to my film resulted in it being pulled off this way. I have not named any party or individual in my film. Even if I had, I am well within my rights to do so.”
