Rabindra Kabya Rahasya

After Sonar Kellay Jawker Dhon, director Sayantan Ghoshal returns with Rabindra Kabya Rahasya – a mystery drama featuring Professor Abhik Bose (Ritwick Chakraborty), a cipher expert drawn into a chilling investigation. A string of murders in 2021 are eerily like a trio of century-old killings – all mysteriously linked to Rabindranath Tagore.
As Abhik’s search deepens, he travels to London, uncovering clues that point to a killer obsessed with Tagore and the publishing world. With singer Hiya Sen (Srabanti Chatterjee) by his side, he decodes cryptic messages, as timelines blur and history bleeds into the present.
Sayantan invests richly in the film’s visual language – Tuban’s cinematography captures both Kolkata’s urban energy and London’s quiet elegance. Flashbacks, shot in moody black-and-white, are atmospheric and meticulously detailed.
Priyanshu Chatterjee’s restrained portrayal of Tagore is a standout – dignified, internalised, and haunting. In one unforgettable close-up, a single eye conveys grief, rage, and helplessness with astonishing subtlety. Makeup and costume design are equally precise, grounding the character in authenticity.
While Ritwick and Srabanti share a believable rapport, the supporting cast adds depth – especially Rwitobroto Mukherjee as the brooding poet Ekalabya, whose simmering intensity holds its own alongside Shantilal Mukherjee and Rajnandini Paul.
The film, however, stumbles in parts. The first half feels scattered in its pursuit of suspense, though the second half picks up with tighter writing. The screenplay occasionally indulges in historical speculation, drawing tenuous links to Tagore’s life without sufficient narrative backing – a risky choice in an age of easy misinformation. The music, mostly familiar Rabindra Sangeet, by Debajyoti Mishra is well rendered but conventional. A more adventurous soundtrack could have elevated the experience.
Despite its flaws, Rabindra Kabya Rahasya is a visually compelling, accessible thriller that entertains without overreaching. For fans of literary puzzles and period intrigue, it’s a satisfying weekend watch – as long as you don’t expect strict historical accuracy.
