Digvijaya asks EC to probe 80,000 probable fake voters in Bhopal

BHOPAL: Congress candidate from

Bhopal

and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh on Saturday went to the Election Commission office here claiming 80,000 fake voters in the

Lok Sabha

constituency. The senior Congress leader demanded punitive action against BLOs (booth level officers) responsible for inclusion for fake voters in the electoral rolls.

Digvijaya Singh alleged there are two kinds of fake voters. “During scrutiny, we found that one person has names in several lists across the constituency. There are 33,790 such highly probable duplicate voters in Bhopal constituency. Another fake-voters possibility is when 20 voters are listed in one address,” he said. Under EC rules, one address with more than 10 voters needs to get physically verified.

But the Congress leader argued that many of the cases found in his scrutiny were single addresses with more than 50 to 60 voters. “There are 46,670 such probable fake voters mainly in the assembly segments of Govindpura, Narela and Berasia. We have asked the Election Commission for a probe and asked EC to register criminal cases against BLOs involved in such duplication,” Digvijaya Singh said.

He further said that he has asked for “absent shifted list” to be given to presiding officers to keep a check on fake voters. “If a person has his name in two booths, then going by the list the presiding officer should inform his counterpart in the other booth soon as voting has been done by the person. In homes with more than 20 voters, physical presence of the voter should be checked,” he said.
