Karnataka assembly election results: How the turncoats have fared

NEW DELHI: The run up to the Karnataka assembly elections saw several prominent leaders from the three major parties switch sides, some unhappy over not getting a ticket while others possibly sensing a shift in political headwinds in the state.

Here is how the turncoats have fared:
Jagadish Shettar (BJP to Congress) - TRAILING
The former Karnataka CM announced his resignation from the BJP after he was denied a ticket for the 2023 assembly elections.

Shettar joined the Congress and said he would be contesting the polls from Hubli-Dharwad Central seat.

As per the latest Election Commission data, Shettar is trailing BJP candidate Mahesh Tenginakai by over 35,000 votes. Shettar had represented the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency since 1994.
Baburao Chinchansur (BJP to Congress) - TRAILING
Five-term MLA Baburao Chinchansur had joined the BJP in 2018. In August 2022, Chinchansur got elected as a member of Karnataka Legislative Council under a BJP ticket. He, however, resigned from the post less than a year later.

He joined the Congress in March this year and was given a ticket to contest from the Gurmitkal constituency.

As per the latest Election Commission data, Chinchansur is trailing JD(S) candidate Sharana Gowda Kandakur by over 3,600 votes.

SR Srinivas (JD-S to Congress) - LEADING
The four-term MLA resigned from the JD(S) on March 27 this year and joined the Congress. Srinivas said he had been accused by the JD(S) of anti-party activities which had caused a rift.

The Congress fielded Srinivas from his Gubbi constituency, which he has been representing since 2004.

As per the latest Election Commission data, Srinivas is leading against BJP candidate S D Dilipkumar by over 8,000 votes.

N Yallappa Gopalakrishna (BJP to Congress) - LEADING
He is a six-time member of the Karnataka legislative assembly from Kudligi. He represented Molakalmuru and Bellary previously -- all under the Congress.

He joined the BJP in 2018 but returned to the Congress in 2023.

As per the latest Election Commission data, Gopalakrishna is leading against BJP candidate S Thippeswamy by over 22,000 votes.
Laxman Savadi (BJP to Congress) - LEADING
The former deputy CM and three-time MLA resigned from the BJP after being denied a ticket in the 2023 polls.

He joined the Congress, which fielded him from his stronghold.

As per the latest Election Commission data, Savadi is leading against BJP candidate Mahesh Kumathalli by over 64,000 votes.
