Hungund assembly seat is one of the 224 constituencies in Karnataka, and part of Bagalkot Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Bharatiya Janata Party’s Gaddigoudar Parvatagouda Chandanagouda at present. The Hungund assembly constituency is also currently held by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In 2018, then two-time MLA Doddanagouda G Patil of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the seat by defeating the sitting member, Kashappanavar Vijayanand Shivashankrappa, of the Congress with a margin of 5,227 votes. Patil had secured total 65,012 votes while Shivashankrappa received 59,785 votes. Before this Patil had won the 2008 and 2004 elections.
In 2013, Congress candidate Shivashankrappa won this seat with 72,720 votes, defeating then two-time sitting MLA of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Patil, who received 56,923 votes. The victory margin was a whopping 15,797 votes.
In 2008, sitting BJP MLA Patil had won this seat with 53,644 votes, defeating Congress’s Shivashankrappa who had received 48,575 votes. The victory margin was just 5,069 votes.
In 2004, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Patil snatched this Congress stronghold after three terms of the party being in power here, defeating its candidate Kashappanavar Gouramma Shivashankarappa by 18,424 votes. Patil received 50,617 votes while Gouramma Shivashankarappa got 32,193 votes. .
In 1999, Congress candidate Kashappanavar Shivashankarappa Rachappa won this seat with 29,307 votes, defeating Janata Dal (United) candidate Patil Gavishidhanagouda Paranagouda who received 28,371 votes. The victory margin was a mere 936 votes.
