In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Jigajinagi Ramesh Chandappa had won from Bijapur Lok Sabha seat with a solid margin of 25,8038 votes by defeating Dr Sunita Devanand Chavan of the Janata Dal (Secular).
As far as assembly polls are concerned, in the 2018 elections, Congress's Shivanand Patil won the seat by defeating Janata Dal (Secular) candidate Somanagouda Basanagouda Patil by a margin of over 3,000 votes.
Shivanand Patil was the sitting MLA since he had won the seat in 2013 assembly elections too by defeating his BJP rival with a healthy margin of 19,676 votes.
Before Patil, the seat was held by Bharatiya Janata Party's Bellubbi Sangappa Kallappa who had won the elections here in 2008.
In 2023, it is a three-cornered contest in the seat.

Janata Dal (Secular) candidate Paramanand B Thanikedar.
