Mumtaz Patel, daughter of late Congress leader Ahmed Patel, exuded confidence in Congress winning in Ankleshwar Assembly Constituency despite it being a neck-to-neck fight in the first phase of the Gujarat assembly elections. "We are advocating a change. There is a neck-to-neck fight here (Ankleshwar) yet I am confident that Congress will win," said Mumtaz Patel. She cast her vote at a polling booth in Ankleshwar, Bharuch.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took a swipe at the Congress over its past 'Garibi Hatao' campaign, claiming that poverty actually increased under the grand old party's rule as it only raised slogans and misguided people instead of doing any concrete work for them. He was addressing a rally in Bodeli town of Chhota Udepur district in Gujarat, where assembly elections will be held in its second phase on December 5. "For decades, Congress has been saying only one thing - Garibi Hatao (eliminate poverty). The only thing they did was to raise slogans, give promises and misguide people. That was the reason why poverty actually increased during its regime," PM Modi alleged.

Gujarat polls: Live webcasting of 13,065 polling stations under way to ensure transparency

Live webcasting of 13,065 polling stations in 19 districts is under way to ensure transparency in the elections. "There will be continuous observation till the completion of the polling process through live webcasting of more than 50 per cent of polling booths in the state to keep a close watch on the voting process during the assembly elections in Gujarat," said state chief electoral officer P Bharathi. He said that all arrangements have been made as per the instructions of the Election Commission. In the first phase, polling began at 25,430 polling stations, out of which there is live webcasting at 13,065 polling stations.

"Around 0.1 per cent ballot units, 0.1 per cent control units and 0.3 per cent VVPATs were replaced in three hours of voting. Reserve machine sets are available in all districts with the zonal officer in-charge of that area. Wherever a small or big problem occurs, arrangements have been made to replace them in no time," Gujarat CEO's office said in a release.

Out of the 19 districts where polling was under way on Thursday, Tapi recorded the highest voter turnout at 46.29 per cent till 1 pm, followed by Dang 46.22 per cent and Narmada 46.16 per cent. All these districts are tribal-dominated. Porbandar recorded the lowest turnout of 30.06 per cent and Botad reported 30.12 per cent voting during the period. The voting percentage in Surat stood at 33.40 per cent and in Rajkot at 32.89 per cent. (PTI)
