Margao: Discontent over proposed jetty projects along the Zuari river in Xelvona has erupted into a people’s movement, with residents across sections backing the agitation against what they fear will become another coal corridor through their village. The protest gained momentum after the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) recommended environmental clearance in April 2025 for two jetties at Bag-Xelvona and Hodor. Protesters are set to march to the Goa Pollution Control Board office in Panaji on Monday.
The mining firm’s proposal includes a 336 sqm cargo platform, a 237 sqm storage jetty, and a 267 m gabion wall along the river bund, allegedly to ease coal movement.
Chartered accountant Pradip Kakodkar of Curchorem said, “The sole purpose of having a jetty at Assolda is for coal handling,” he said, alleging the survey ignored coconut trees, mangroves, fishing and farming activities. “We condemn this misleading survey and demand that the land be resurveyed in the presence of the villagers.”
He warned that coal handling would impact people within a 10 km radius and urged residents to join the march.
