Lalgarh/Goaltore: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday came down heavily on the Election Commission for its alleged failure to prevent her party workers from getting killed in the run up to the assembly polls.
The Trinamool Congress supremo said it was the EC which is looking after law and order in the poll-bound state. "Now that election has been declared, police are under the Election Commission.
The EC is keeping a watch on police. Now the EC is looking after law and order. In the past seven days, eight Trinamool Congress workers were killed by CPM activists," she said. "Who has given the right to CPM to kill?" Mamata asked while addressing an election rally in West Midnapore's Lalgarh.
Trinamool Congress vice president Mukul Roy resonated this to reporters after a meeting with CEO Sunil Gupta during the day. he said that the onus of maintaining law and order was in the hands of the Election Commission during poll time. "Six of our workers were killed. They need to increase level of voters' confidence. One of our offices has also been burnt," he said. Mukul threatened that if another ruling party workers is murdered, they would take his body to the CEO's office. Mukul claimed that no worker of other parties has died in this poll season. "We want people to vote without fear. We will win by two-thirds majority," he said.
Addressing election meetings at Lalgarh and Goaltore, Mamata said, "We are not scared. If you (opposition workers) can fight us, do so. Or else, simply keep quiet. Elections come and go. When elections are held, forces will also come. But they will be around for only three days and then go away. You better remember that after the election, all power will be in the hands of the state government once again." The Trinamool supremo was campaigning for her party's Jhargram candidate Sukumar Hansda at Lalgarh and Salboni nominee Srikanto Mahato at Goaltore.
