He may be the Captain's lookalike and may have donned the role of the actor-turned politician for the past 15 years. But for Kumar, it's not just the demeanour that distinguishes him from other 'duplicates' in the scene. He can imitate not just the DMDK chief Vijayakanth's gestures and mannerisms, Kumar sounds and speaks like the politician.
However, Kumar is an upset man these days.
The recent split in the DMDK has distressed him. He said the DMDK chief could have dealt with the issue better. "There was uncertainty over electoral alliances, which made some prominent leaders leave the party. They took the extreme step mainly because they were worried about their future," said Kumar of Namakkal
Known popularly as 'Vijayakanth' Kumar, the 43-year-old said he "was not sure whether he will be called for election campaigns due to the recent split in the party". Split or not, for Kumar, Vijayakanth remains his eternal and favourite hero.
"For me, he is god. I am popular today only because of Captain. So I will always be loyal to him. But I am deeply concerned with the recent happenings," he said.
Kumar first started donning the role of the Captain in 1992 after friends in a drama troupe told him that he looked like him. "I was an MGR-Rajni fan. When my friends told me about the similarity in looks, I stood before the mirror to check. Gradually, this mirror connection developed into a kind of worship, and I soon became a Vijayakanth fan," said Kumar, who has appeared as the Captain's lookalike in more than 3,000 party functions across Tamil Nadu.
As an artist, Kumar always carries his make-up kit with him. He does the make-up himself and it takes only an hour. But today, Kumar lacks confidence due to fissures in the party. "But Captain will find a solution to all the issues soon. I believe that he will save the party," he added.
