CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu recorded 63.7% voter turnout till 3pm on Monday. Polling was slow to pick up in many districts due to rain.
Experts say the final turnout is likely to cross 75% but will be below the expectations of the Election Commission, which was aiming for 100% polling.
Chennai district, comprising 16 constituencies, recorded 50.27% polling, while the neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur recorded 59% and 60.63% till 3pm.
Voting was also slow in Cuddalore with only 54.74% of voters getting themselves inked till 3pm.
According to Election Commission sources, there has been no decision on extending the polling time in rain-hit districts. DMK AIADMK and Congress have asked the EC to extend polling by an hour. “No decision has yet been taken on extending the time,” said a senior EC official.
The next update is expected at 5pm.
