CHENNAI: On Thursday, the Congress and the DMK agreed to a deal in which four constituencies (Ambattur, Royapuram, Mylapore and Maduravoyal) in Chennai were allotted to the Congress. With the AIADMK set to contest all seats in the city , the two Dravidian parties are likely to face off against each other in some 18 of the 22 constituencies.
“We may allocate one or two seats to allies. Beyond this, it will be a straight between us and the AIADMK,“ said a senior DMK leader not willing to be named. In the past, the capital remained DMK's bastion irre spective of who came to power. In 2006, quick relief distribution after the 2005 floods Rs 2,000 cash and 10 kg rice along with dhoti and sarees is said to have helped swing the city to the AIADMK.
In 2011, the AIADMK swept polls in Chennai and seems confident of retaining its hold now with J Jayalalithaa deciding to contest from R K Nagar.Leading the DMK from the front is M K Stalin who is likely to contest from Kolathur. The ruling party may well be hoping the `5,000 cash deposit this year will help keep the city in its grip.
