Thiruvananthapuram/Thrissur: Congress president Sonia Gandhi launched her election campaign in Kerala on Monday with a blistering attack on the Narendra Modi government’s divisive and anti-poor policies, and said a vote for UDF would be a vote for the growth of the state and for protecting its secular fabric.
A day after the prime minister, speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, referred to the ‘Italian connection’ in the context of the Agusta scam, the Congress president returned the favour at a mammoth rally in the state capital by saying that Modi had failed to keep the promises he made before the Lok Sabha elections two years ago.
“He promised lakhs and lakhs of jobs, money in all bank accounts and to bring down the fuel price. But what is happening now? He is taxing the poor. He is taking the savings of the middle class by changing the provident fund rules,” Sonia said.
Turning emotional, Sonia dwelt at length on personal attacks on her. “The RSS, BJP and other parties have taunted me for my birth in Italy. I was born to honest parents and I am not ashamed of it. Yes I have relatives in Italy ... But it is here in India that the blood of my loved ones is mingled. My beloved’s blood was shed here. It is here that I will breathe my last. It is here my ashes will be merged,” she said.
