Guwahati: CPM politburo member Brinda Karat expressed concern over the rise of BJP in the multi-ethnic and multi-community state of Assam. She was addressing an election campaign for CPM candidate for Dispur, Sangita Das, here on Sunday.
While accusing the Congress of making the state regress in its 15-year corruption-marred rule, Karat took a dig at the BJP alleging the saffron party uses religion for garnering votes.
"We will protect religious places from attack but we will not exploit religion for votes. For us, religion is a personal matter. Everyone has the right to go to church, gurdwara or any religious place they wish to go to," Karat said. "Owaisi is bringing his religion into politics, while Bhagwat wants to take ahead the agenda of a Hindu rashtra," she added.
Karat said the people of Delhi and Bihar gave a mandate against BJP's divisive politics and Assam, Bengal and Kerala will do the same. She said the Left is the only viable alternative for the people of the country, which is at crossroads in the wake of 'growing communal polarisation'. She urged voters of Dispur to vote for Sangita Das to ensure the issues of Dispur are heard at the assembly.
