Guwahati: A day after state Congress president Anjan Dutta accused BJP of fielding candidates with criminal backgrounds in the assembly election, BJP on Tuesday charged the ruling party with having done the same.
The saffron party went so far as to describe Dutta as member of a 'jihadi sleeper cell' operating in the state.
State president of BJP's minority morcha Mominul Aawal alleged that both Congress and AIUDF promote Islamic terror outfits.
"Sometimes, I feel people like Anjan Dutta have been working as members of sleeper cells of these Islamic outfits. Under Congress, the activities of Islamic terror outfits increased," Aawal said on Tuesday.
BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami accused Dutta of spreading canards about BJP leaders. Goswami further alleged that Congress has a record of fielding leaders with a criminal background. "Congress has already sensed defeat and has resorted to making tall claims about its performance in the recently concluded assembly election. Dutta himself was associated with criminal activities," Goswami added.
According Assam Election Watch's report, eight BJP and 13 Congress candidates in the assembly election have criminal records.
