Guwahati: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Saturday said the regional party would sort its differences with BJP on the citizenship issue and ensure constitutional safeguards for the indigenous people of Assam.
AGP in its election manifesto said it would implement the Assam Accord (1985) and resolve the migrants' issue. According to the accord, anyone who entered Indian territory after March 25, 1971, is an 'illegal' citizen.
The Centre last year issued a notification ensuring shelter for Hindu migrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan who entered India within December 31, 2014.
AGP had staged protests against this notification.
"There were some differences but AGP will stick to its stand. We will implement the clauses of the Assam Accord. Now, as we are closer to BJP, we are in a better position to sort out differences," AGP spokesperson Dilip Patgiri said during a joint press conference with BJP here on Saturday.
BJP spokesperson and president of its minority morcha Mominul Awal said, "To work for the betterment of indigenous people has been the common priority of both parties." Abdul Gani
