Mr. Rajiv Kumar (15 May 2022 - Present)

Mr. Rajiv Kumar, born on February 19, 1960, in Bihar, has a distinguished career in public service. He graduated with a degree in Economics and pursued a Master's in Public Administration. He joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1984 from the Jharkhand cadre. Kumar has held several important positions, including Secretary in the Department of Financial Services and Chairman of the Public Enterprises Selection Board. As an Election Commissioner since September 1, 2020, and currently as the Chief Election Commissioner since May 15, 2022, he has focused on enhancing electoral integrity and voter outreach initiatives.

Mr. Sushil Chandra (13 April 2021 to 14 May 2022)

Mr. Sushil Chandra was born on May 15, 1957, in Uttar Pradesh. He pursued his early education in Uttar Pradesh and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a degree in Law. Chandra joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1980 and served in various capacities in the Income Tax Department. Before becoming the Chief Election Commissioner, he was the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). His tenure as CEC was notable for his efforts to streamline electoral processes and enhance voter registration and participation.

Mr. Sunil Arora (02 December 2018 to 12 April 2021)

Mr. Sunil Arora was born on April 13, 1956, in Punjab. He completed his early education in Punjab and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in English Literature. Joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1980 from the Rajasthan cadre, Arora held several key positions, including Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Airlines. As Chief Election Commissioner, Arora oversaw the 2019 General Elections and several state elections, focusing on enhancing the use of technology in the electoral process and ensuring robust voter participation.

Mr. O. P. Rawat (23 January 2018 to 01 December 2018)

Mr. Om Prakash Rawat was born on December 2, 1953, in Madhya Pradesh. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Physics and later pursued a Master’s degree in Social Development Planning. Mr. Rawat joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1977 from the Madhya Pradesh cadre. Throughout his career, he served in various capacities, including Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh and Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. As Chief Election Commissioner, Rawat emphasized voter education and the importance of free and fair elections. His tenure was marked by initiatives to improve the electoral process and ensure transparency.

Sh. A. K. Joti (06 July 2017 to 22 January 2018)

Sh. Achal Kumar Joti was born on January 23, 1953, in Gujarat. He completed his early education in Gujarat and graduated with a degree in Physics. He joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1975 from the Gujarat cadre. Over the years, Joti held several significant positions, including Chief Secretary of Gujarat, where he played a pivotal role in state administration. He also served as the Managing Director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL). As Chief Election Commissioner, Joti was instrumental in managing the electoral processes in a fair and transparent manner, ensuring the smooth conduct of elections during his brief tenure.

Dr. Nasim Zaidi (19 April 2015 to 05 July 2017)

Dr. Nasim Zaidi was born on July 6, 1952, in Uttar Pradesh, India. He pursued his early education in Uttar Pradesh before obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He furthered his education with a Master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University, USA. Dr. Zaidi joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1976, belonging to the Uttar Pradesh cadre. Throughout his career, he held several key positions, including Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Director General of Civil Aviation. As Chief Election Commissioner, he oversaw significant electoral reforms and the successful conduct of various state and national elections. His tenure was marked by efforts to enhance the transparency and efficiency of the electoral process.
