Established under the aegis of Jagan Nath Gupta Memorial Education Society in the year 1993, Jagan Institute of Management Studies, Rohini has carved a niche for itself in the field of management education.
According to S C Gupta, honorary secretary, academics, JIMS, ‘‘The JIMS started with its flagship course ‘postgraduate diploma in business management’ (PGDBM), AICTE approved two-year programme, which is now available as a part-time, three-year weekend programme as well.’’
Encouraged with the success of the PGDBM programme JIMS commenced the three-year programmes in BBA, BCA and MCA in affiliation with the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
In a recent initiative, JIMS has introduced a four-year Bachelors in Computer Aided Management (BCAM) in affiliation with Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Nitin Sethi, programme chairman and centre head, JIMS, said: ‘‘The BCAM programme aims at building future managers. The programme will put a lot of emphasis on information technology as the idea is to train future managers in how to use technology effectively. It will help them in better decision taking.’’
All the programmes at JIMS are designed in a way that skills are imparted into two areas, one is the educational part and second is the development of interpersonal skills. The director, JIMS, R P Maheshwari said: ‘‘We emphasise on overall personality development of our students. We conduct mock-interviews and encourage industry interaction. After the two-month practical training students undertake at various organisations, we ask for an exhaustive feedback on their performance.’’
Furthermore, JIMS has a unique system of ‘personality mapping’ of a student. Sethi said: ‘‘Personality mapping is bringing forth strong capabilities of a student, which can be further honed. Attributes highlighted through this system helps in deciding what would be an appropriate area for a student. For example, a student who is ambitious and extrovert would do better in the marketing world whereas, one with empathy would be suitable for the Human Resource Development.
JIMS is the first management institute, after the IIMs, to introduce a management journal called 8M. The institute is shortly launching 8IT, the first journal on IT in India. In addition, JIMS is active in company research projects, with its recent assignments being Amul Icecream, Toshiba and Aptech. Sethi said: ‘‘ We involve our students in research work and encourage them for a career in research.’’
Remarking on the faculty at JIMS, Gupta said: ‘‘Any institute is known for its faculty and I can say that we have a commendable faculty here. We even have faculty evaluation done regularly by the students.’’
JIMS students have found placement in leading organisations like Reliance, Luxor Parker, Cipla and BBC. Gupta said: ‘‘Our placement rate is 95 per cent.’’ JIMS has another campus at Kalkaji and is shortly coming up at Vasant Kunj as well.
