Renewed BEd programme
The Central Institute of Education (CIE) will soon extend the duration of its Bachelors of Education programme to two years. The programme, till now, was spread over a year for students who cleared the entrance tests. Further, with students applying from across the country for the BEd programme, the institute also plans to increase its intake.
The institute, at present, admits around 200 students for its academic session but soon, another 100 seats will be added.
"We will be starting the course in Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, affiliated to Delhi University. The college will hold classes for around 100 students who will be admitted through the same entrance examination," informed Rama Mathew, professor, CIE.
The proposed two-year BEd programme will focus on the practical training of the 'soon-to-be' teachers. "If our proposal is accepted, the students will receive practical training for a year as we think training teachers today is of utmost importance. There are so many agencies like the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) that hold yearly training sessions to update teachers' skills," stated Bharati Baveja, dean, CIE.
Baveja further added that the new programme will address two basic concerns, namely: "The first one deals with the development of teachers who will not fit in snugly within the existing educational system in a passive and uncritical manner, but play the role of catalysts for change and institutional renewal. The other concern is to participate in and interact with the existing school system."
CIE has also undertaken a 4-5 year project in the area of in-service teacher education in collaboration with the Open University, UK. "Under the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI), the project will be taken up by our department and proposes to develop an outreach programme for ongoing professional development of practising educators in schools through a multi-mode approach," said Mathew.
