National internship portal powers India's future ready workforce with crores of students opportunities expansion nationwide
NEW DELHI: The National Internship Portal under the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Ministry of Education, has grown into a large-scale digital platform linking students with industry-based learning opportunities across sectors, as part of India’s wider skilling mission. In the last four and a half years, the initiative has recorded 4.7 crore student registrations, 2.9 crore verified learners, 79,57,193 internship opportunities, and 32,78,900 completed internships. Participation has come from 81,483 companies across the country, supported by a nationwide digital system designed to streamline access to internships and track outcomes at scale.Scale of participation across institutionsThe platform has seen formal participation from more than 81,483 companies and 12,077 colleges, which have joined through memoranda of understanding. These institutions span over 200 internship domains, ranging from engineering and management to digital technologies and other emerging fields. This growing network has helped open up structured internship pathways for students across institutions, widening access to work-based learning and improving exposure to real workplace environments across the country.Student engagement reflects the scale of the initiative. With 4.7 crore registrations and 2.9 crore verified users, the portal has become a central point for internship discovery and mapping across states and institutions.
The system has also recorded 32,78,900 completed internships, suggesting sustained engagement between students and organisations, including increasing reach in rural and semi-urban areas.Industry participation and emerging trendsThe platform brings together a mix of global technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, IBM, Cisco, ServiceNow and Salesforce, along with public sector institutions including C-DAC, NHAI, the Indian Army and NCDC.This integration has strengthened the connection between classrooms and workplaces, giving students structured exposure to industry practices and helping bridge the gap between academic learning and job readiness. At the same time, student preferences are clearly shifting towards emerging areas. Courses and internships in artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud computing, app development, cybersecurity and supply chain management are seeing higher traction. The trend reflects how quickly skill requirements are changing in line with India’s digital transformation.Leadership vision and national collaboration frameworkOfficials from the Ministry of Education, AICTE, and NETF have described the portal as a coordinated national effort to bring structure to internship access across higher education institutions. The initiative has been supported at the policy level by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Secretary (Higher Education) Vineet Joshi, Govind Jaiswal, Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Yogesh Singh, Shyama Rath, and Dr. Buddha Chandrasekhar, who have collectively ensured policy alignment and implementation support across departments.Speaking about the platform, Dr Buddha Chandrasekhar, Technical Architect and one of the key architects of the National Internship Portal, told TOI Education: “National Internship Enterprise Platform, Ministry of Education isn’t just a platform. It’s a national talent engine connecting learning, skills, and a future-ready India. Exactly what a $5T+ economy needs.”Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe also said: “When policy meets execution, transformation happens. This is how India is building its demographic dividend into a global advantage.”Their remarks underline the intent behind the initiative — to move internships from isolated institutional efforts to a more connected national framework.Expanding access and future directionThe portal now functions as a bridge between ministries, public institutions, industry partners and academic bodies, creating a more unified internship ecosystem across the country. There is also a growing push to bring more MSMEs and SMEs into the platform, expanding the pool of opportunities available to students. The system continues to be updated through AICTE dashboards and official reporting channels, with participation data and internship listings evolving as more institutions and companies join the network.
