VIJAYAWADA: About 61 per cent of the engineering seats have been filled in around the city in the first phase of the counselling for Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET), with mechanical being the least percentage of seats filled in the city.
Out of the 11,429 engineering seats in and around the city, some 7,035 seats were filled.
About 309 seats of 378 seats were filled at Dhanekula Institute of Engineering and technology, but some colleges, such as Nimra Institute of Science and Technology, achieved little success in filling seats.
Apart from the highly demanded engineering colleges in and around the city, such as the VR Siddhartha College of Engineering and PVP Siddhartha Engineering College, where almost all the seats were filled in the phase 1 counselling, all the other city colleges have been struggling to fill the seats, said Gadde Raja, secretary at AP Association of Private Engineering Colleges (APEC). CSE and ECE are the courses in demand in the city and also in the state, and the colleges have little trouble filling the seats in those courses, he said. But, the other courses, especially the MEC (mechanical course), are in decline, he added.
Only 46.2 per cent of the mechanical seats are filled in Krishna District, which has about 30 engineering colleges. Out of 2,259 seats, some 1,045 mechanical seats were filled in the phase 1 counselling. About 46.4 per cent of the seats were filled in EEE. On the other hand, nearly 80.05 per cent of the seats were filled in CSE, and nearly 69.07 per cent of seats were filled in ECE.
Mechanical course, which is known as evergreen stream, is facing a tough period in the city, Raja said. In fact, the pattern is the same across the state, he added.
