From generative AI to cybersecurity, how IITs are democratising AI literacy for India’s youth
India’s premier engineering institutions, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), are at the forefront of a new movement: Making Artificial Intelligence (AI) education accessible, practical, and inclusive for learners across the country. Traditionally known for producing elite engineers, the IITs are now taking deliberate steps to ensure that AI literacy is no longer limited to technical specialists. Their initiatives span gender inclusion, cybersecurity readiness, and interdisciplinary learning, empowering India’s youth to thrive in an AI-driven world.
The program goes beyond teaching technical skills. It emphasises collaborative learning and practical applications of AI in business, entrepreneurship, and management, reflecting the institute’s commitment to fostering gender diversity in technology. IIT Bombay’s Senior Survey 2025 also highlighted the growing popularity of AI tools among students, with ChatGPT emerging as the second most used learning platform after Coursera. Yet, the survey indicated that practical applications, such as using AI for resume crafting, remain under-explored, pointing to the need for more hands-on integration of AI skills in career preparation.
The curriculum emphasises practical, project-based learning, offering participants experience with over 30 GenAI security tools, such as LangChain, GPT, SOAR, and SIEM. Weekend online classes are supplemented with an optional immersive experience at IIT Roorkee’s campus.
In addition, the program helps learners prepare for the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification. By focusing on protecting AI systems, algorithms, and cloud infrastructures—not just networks—this initiative positions India’s security workforce to proactively navigate an AI-native digital landscape.
Aligned with India’s National Credit Framework (NCrF), these programs allow higher education institutions to award academic credit, making AI learning both accessible and formally recognised. By targeting students, faculty, and professionals across diverse disciplines, IIT Madras ensures that AI literacy is not confined to technical fields, preparing a broad cohort of learners for AI-driven careers and research opportunities.
Through accessible programs, practical projects, and alignment with national educational frameworks, IITs are cultivating a digitally skilled workforce capable of leading India’s AI-driven growth. Importantly, these programs ensure that AI education is not only about knowledge acquisition but about practical empowerment—giving learners the skills, confidence, and opportunities to actively participate in the country’s technological transformation.
Whether it’s a woman entrepreneur learning generative AI for business, a cybersecurity professional defending AI systems, or a student from a non-technical field exploring AI applications, IITs are making it possible for learners from all walks of life to become active contributors to India’s AI-driven future.

IIT Roorkee: Addressing next generation cyber threats
As AI adoption grows, so do the digital risks associated with it. Recognising this, IIT Roorkee has partnered with AI skilling company Futurense to launch India’s first GenAI-powered Cybersecurity Programme. Starting on October 18, 2025, this nine-month hybrid course prepares learners to tackle real-world AI-enabled cyber threats, including deepfakes, AI-authored phishing attacks, and exploits involving large language models (LLMs).The curriculum emphasises practical, project-based learning, offering participants experience with over 30 GenAI security tools, such as LangChain, GPT, SOAR, and SIEM. IIT Madras: Making AI accessible across disciplines
IIT Madras is expanding the reach of AI education beyond engineering through five free courses on the SWAYAM Plus platform. These interdisciplinary courses cover AI applications in Physics, Chemistry, Accounting, Cricket Analytics, and an introductory AI/ML course using Python. Designed for learners with no prior coding or AI knowledge, the courses range from 25 to 45 hours and include hands-on projects, datasets, and case studies.Aligned with India’s National Credit Framework (NCrF), these programs allow higher education institutions to award academic credit, making AI learning both accessible and formally recognised. By targeting students, faculty, and professionals across diverse disciplines, IIT Madras ensures that AI literacy is not confined to technical fields, preparing a broad cohort of learners for AI-driven careers and research opportunities.
Democratising AI for India’s future
Together, these initiatives highlight a broader shift in India’s approach to AI education—from exclusive, technical training to inclusive, hands-on learning. By empowering women, equipping cybersecurity professionals, and engaging interdisciplinary learners, IITs are expanding the AI literacy landscape significantly.Through accessible programs, practical projects, and alignment with national educational frameworks, IITs are cultivating a digitally skilled workforce capable of leading India’s AI-driven growth.
