Chennai fine arts students explore caste, migration in their latest exhibition
CHENNAI: Ten final year students from the Government College of Fine Arts Chennai, are presenting an exhibition of artwork at the Lalit Kala Akademi that throws light on some of modern society's most pertinent issues.
Arul Raj, a native of Sri Lanka who is doing his final year in Masters of Fine Arts at the institute, found his drive in exploring the lives of Indian tea estate workers who migrated to Sri Lanka almost 150 years ago. "I come from a family of tea estate workers myself and wanted to use art to portray the history and experiences of this community, as it holds a personal space in my heart," he says.
Titled 'Unspoken', the artwork displayed at the exhibition dwell into issues like the dynamics of caste in today's world, the pharma industry and the hardships faced by the weaver community of Kancheepuram.
It will be on till February 25.
