Chromebooks outsell Apple Mac devices in the US for the first time

For the first time, the shipments of Google's Chromebook devices surpassed that of rival Apple's Mac laptops and PCs in the US in the first quarter of 2016, said IDC analyst Linn Huang while talking to The Verge.

The analyst did not reveal any specific numbers on the shipments of Chromebooks. However, it was said that Apple shipped 1.76 million Mac devices in the US in the first quarter of 2016. This means that the shipments of Chromebooks exceeded 1.76 million.

The analyst further added that K-12 education market was the primary sector accounting for majority of Chromebook shipments. This has been the case since the last few years. It is worth mentioning that total Chromebook shipment numbers come from combined shipments from all the Chrome OS OEMs like Dell, HP and Lenovo. Shipment numbers outside the US still remain a secret, for now.


Chromebooks are likely to see a boost in the coming future as Google is planning to bring all Android apps (including Google Play Store) to its Chrome OS. The search giant is supposed make an official announcement later today in the ongoing Google I/O 2016 conference.

The confirmation came from a session description on the Google I/O website. The description has since been pulled from the website.

"Today we announced that we're adding the best mobile app experiences in the world, Android apps and the Google Play store, to the best browser in the world, Chrome! Come to this session and test your Android apps for Chrome OS. You will get hands on help from our friendly engineers on how to optimize your Android app for Chromebooks. Oh, and we will also be giving the first 50 developers to show up a free Chromebook so they can get a head start bringing their apps to Chrome!," read the event description.
