Tenders finalised for 3 MW floating solar project on Meghadrigedda

Visakhapatnam: After completing the 2 MW floating solar power project at Mudasarlova reservoir, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) will soon launch the work on the 3 MW floating project on Meghadrigedda.

for the project. In total, this project is estimated to generate around 4.2 million units of power per year, offsetting over 3,960 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Speaking to TOI, GVMC commissioner M Hari Narayanan said the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will fund the 3 MW floating solar project under the Urban Climate Change Resilience Trust Fund. “The other projects funded by the ADB include e-vehicles and rejuvenation of the catchment area under Mudasarlova reservoir,” said Hari Narayanan.

One of the major sources of water for Visakhapatnam, Meghadrigedda reservoir supplies about 10 MGD water to the city. The perennial freshwater stream is located some 15 kilometres south of Visakhapatnam. The reservoir was commissioned in 1979. Apart from the 3 MW project, the GVMC will also take up another 15 MW solar floating project at the reservoir due to its proximity to the city as well as its huge surface area. As per industry estimates, utilising a mere 10% to 15% of India’s water resources to set up floating solar plants, it could generate up to 300 GW of power.
