VISAKHAPATNAM: CPI(M) and CITU cadre held protests at Vizag, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts on Monday asking the state government to supply quality onions at subsidised prices.
Though the government had announced it would supply onions at Rs 30/kg at rythu bazaars, very few outlets sold onions on Monday. The majority of consumers expressed concern over the poor supply of onions at rythu bazaars.
In Vizagās retails markets Maharashtra variety of onion was sold at Rs 75/ kg while Kurnool variety was sold at Rs 50/kg.
The price of Maharashtra onion increased to Rs 75/kg from Rs 60 in open markets in Vizag city. Though the price of the onion at the rythu bazaars is around Rs 30/kg, the quality was not good, said consumers. CPM and CITU leaders said the government has failed to provide onions to consumers at subsidised prices.
