Visakhapatnam: With
World Environment Day coming up and social media campaigns around it getting stronger, city green lovers have commenced the ‘My Vizag, My Green Vizag’ campaign as a platform for sharing various activities that denizens are undertaking for a better and greener Visakhapatnam. The campaign has been initiated by Ananda Cityzen and
Mother Earth Environment Consciousness Society
(Meecons).
The initiatives can be small and of the everyday kind, such as using cloth bags rather than plastic packets, taking prints on both sides of a paper, or bigger actions like installing and desilting
rain water harvesting
pits or rooftop solar units.
For example, green activist S Ravi Kanth Reddy has been doing his part for a green Visakhapatnam by using a cloth bag since 2016 to carry the morning milk everyday from the milk kiosk. AU environment science student, Shalom Teresa carries a stainless steel spoon, fork and straw on outings or picnics in order to avoid single-use plastic spoons and forks and reduce plastic litter.
The campaign is aimed at encouraging every citizen to do their bit for the environment. Shalom says, “One person can make a difference to the environment by making others emulate him or her in their green initiative for a better city.”
