VISAKHAPATNAM: As many as 724 motorists, who were caught driving in an inebriated condition between June 10 and June 14 at various places in the city, were fined by the local courts.
The magistrate has slapped a fine of Rs 400 to Rs 3,000 on 724 tipsy motorists while 22 motorists were given a fine and jail term of one to six days.
ADCP (Traffic) M Ramesh Kumar said that a total of Rs6.9 lakh was collected and 22 persons from different parts of the city were jailed for the tipsy driving.
“We are planning to increase surprise drives against tipsy driving at some more strategic locations in the city during the morning and evening hours following the complaints from the commuters,” he added.
A traffic police constable said that they will produce the motorists, who were caught for tipsy driving, before the court based on ascending order of their Blood Alcohol Content (BAC).
Based on the BAC of the motorists, the magistrate will slap fines and also sentence some to jail term, he added.
