Tirupati: A shocking case has come to light in Tirupati East, where police uncovered the death of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl allegedly at the hands of her mother. The incident unfolded after the child was reported missing on February 19, prompting her grandmother to lodge a complaint.
According to police, the mother, Y. Ashalatha, daughter of Nagarathnamma and Ranga of Auto Nagar locality, had divorced her first husband about a year-and-a-half ago. She later met 21-year-old I Reddy Kumar of Chennampalli Harijanawada in Yerpedu mandal through a social networking platform, and the two married last year at a local temple.
However, Reddy Kumar's parents refused to accept Ashalatha after learning she had been married earlier and had a daughter. Police said Kumar began pressurising her, claiming they could live together happily only if she did not have the child.
Investigators revealed that on Feb 19, Ashalatha allegedly killed her daughter and, with the help of Kumar and his friend Ramu, buried the body near Papanaidupeta. While the trio attempted to conceal the crime, suspicions grew after the child's grandmother reported her missing.
The case, which began as a missing child complaint, soon developed into a murder probe. During questioning, Ashalatha and Kumar confessed to their involvement and led police to the burial site. The body was exhumed on Wednesday, and post-mortem formalities were completed at the spot.
Police have launched a search for Ramu, who allegedly assisted the couple in disposing of the body. Officials said further investigation is underway and legal proceedings will follow.
