VIJAYAWADA

: Hours after the AP high court lifted the stay order on the Polavaram project works,

irrigation

department officials and representatives of the new contractor Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) performed 'bhumi pooja' at the project site.


The irrigation department signed the agreement with MEIL on Thursday night and works would begin on Saturday. Reverse tendering on Polavaram has saved nearly 628 crore as MEIL came forward to take up the work with a 12.6% less amount at 4,358 crore.

"Our stand is vindicated. We are committed to complete the project within two years," said irrigation minister Anil Kumar Yadav.

MEIL already has an action plan in place to pool its resources within two years and has assured the government to complete the project as early as possible. The company has started working overtime now that flood water has receded.

Sources said that MEIL will begin work on the main

reservoir

and hydropower station simultaneously.
