Over 9,000 cardiac patients saved by 108 ambulance service in 3 months
Vijayawada: The 108 ambulance services in Andhra Pradesh have saved as many as 9,183 cardiac patients over the past three months, highlighting their critical role in life-saving interventions across the state.Operated under Bhavya Health Services, the 108 emergency response system has been consistently delivering rapid and effective medical assistance, particularly in cases of heart attacks, where timely intervention is crucial, officials in the medical and health department said.Officials said the service has been instrumental in responding within the "golden hour", the first hour after a cardiac episode, significantly improving survival rates. Unlike conventional ambulance services that primarily focus on patient transport, the 108 ambulance system functions as a fully equipped mobile emergency care unit.Officials said each ambulance is staffed with trained emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who are capable of administering immediate life-saving procedures such as CPR, oxygen support, blood pressure management and basic life support even before reaching a hospital.
The service has also proven vital in handling emergency childbirth cases, especially in rural areas. EMTs are trained to safely conduct deliveries in ambulances when immediate hospital access is not possible, ensuring both maternal and neonatal safety."A key feature of the 108 system is its integration with a 24/7 Emergency Response Centre, where doctors guide on-ground teams in real time. With the help of advanced technology, including live monitoring through in-ambulance cameras, medical professionals can assess patient conditions and advise EMTs during transit," the officials said.Officials further noted that the service has maintained uniform efficiency across both rural and urban regions, responding to thousands of emergency calls and ensuring timely medical care statewide.Health authorities have urged the public to immediately dial 108 in case of symptoms such as chest pain, breathing difficulty or excessive sweating, stressing that prompt action can make the difference between life and death.
