MP seeks Centre’s support for Kondaveedu fort restoration under Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme

Vijayawada: Emphasising the cultural and historical legacy of the 14th-century Kondaveedu Fort, Narasaraopet MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu urged Union tourism and culture minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to sanction funds for its development under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme.The MP met Shekhawat in New Delhi on Friday and submitted a representation highlighting the fort's heritage and tourism potential, seeking speedy approval of the proposal.Located in the Chilakaluripet constituency of Palnadu district, Kondaveedu Fort once served as the capital of the Reddy dynasty. Devarayalu described it as a symbol of Andhra Pradesh's glorious past, with immense potential to emerge as a major tourist destination. However, he noted that inadequate restoration, conservation, and visitor amenities had prevented the site from realising its full potential.He informed the minister that the state govt had already approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and forwarded it to the Centre. The ₹100-crore project, planned in phases, includes restoration of damaged structures, scientific conservation, interpretation centres, light-and-sound shows, improved road connectivity, and basic amenities such as drinking water, sanitation, and rest areas.The MP stressed that the initiative would preserve the monument, boost tourism, generate employment for local youth, and enhance income prospects for small businesses in Palnadu. He described it as a key driver of regional growth and Andhra Pradesh's economy. Responding, Shekhawat assured that the proposal would be examined positively.
