GITAM selected for quantum tech lab initiative

Visakhapatnam: GITAM Deemed to be University, Visakhapatnam, has been selected among 23 leading institutions in the country to establish an undergraduate teaching laboratory in quantum technologies. The initiative is supported by the Union govt's department of science and technology, which will contribute Rs 75 lakh, while GITAM will invest Rs 25 lakh. Quantum technology is one of the few frontier areas that advanced nations are unlikely to share openly. Computing, communication, sensing, and materials are all being reshaped by quantum science, and those who lead in this field are likely to shape the next few decades of global technology."That is exactly why the National Quantum Mission exists and why it fits within the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. India is building its own capabilities in quantum technologies – from fundamental research to manufacturing and skilled talent- rather than depending on imports. GITAM is planning to establish a quantum teaching laboratory and introduce a new minor in quantum computing for science and technology students, with practical components in optics and quantum simulators. The university will also collaborate with expert faculty from TIFR, IISc, and the IITs. This initiative will help build real capacity for Visakhapatnam and the state in what is likely to be one of the most important technologies of the coming decade," said an official from GITAM.
