British-era school in ASR district gears up for centenary

Visakhapatnam: The Government School in the tiny tribal village of Kilagada under Munchingiput mandal in Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district has carved a niche for itself and will celebrate 120 years of its existence in April 2026. Alumni of the school are contributing financially and voluntarily to develop infrastructure and ensure grand centenary celebrations on April 14 and 15. Interestingly, the school continues to draw students despite the presence of private institutions in the region.A primary school in the tribal hamlet of Kilagada traces its origins to the British era, having been established by the British in 1905. The school, which functioned from Class I to Class V, was the first educational institution in the surrounding areas of Munchingiput and Pedabayalu mandals. When it was set up, classes were conducted in hut-like structures.
In the decades that followed, the school emerged as a beacon of education for tribal communities, catering to the children of small farmers and the limited number of government employees in the region. Although Kilagada is located more than two kilometres from the road point, students from neighbouring villages walked long distances to reach the school due to its reputation for quality education.Eighty-five-year-old Vanthinibha Kondaiah, who was born and raised in Kilagada, studied at the school, later returned as a teacher, served for many years, and eventually retired from the same institution. "The school was more than an educational institute; it is a symbol of heritage and pride. I am very happy that I will witness its centenary celebrations," he said.The school began with a few students and a single teacher. A few decades after its establishment, it was upgraded to Class VII and later, in the 1990s, elevated to a government high school (up to Class X). It now functions as a government model primary school (Class I–V) and a government high school (Class VI–X)."This school holds a special place in my heart—not only because I studied here (Class I–VII from 1979 to 1986), but also because my family members, including my father, walked these corridors," said Dr. Ambidi Venkata Ramana, the first doctor from Kilagada and a noted general surgeon. "I hope the school's legacy continues."Over the past ten decades, the school has produced many distinguished individuals, including teachers, doctors, engineers, bankers, police personnel, and professionals in corporate leadership roles. Currently, more than 220 students are enrolled. "I have been associated with the school since my childhood. Recently, we developed a playground with a contribution of ₹5 lakh from alumni. Efforts are underway to upgrade facilities and support the centenary celebrations," said Koda Bangarayya, headmaster of the government model primary school.
