Vijayawada: Premier engineering institute Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, is developing the Amaravati campus to offer advanced programmes in emerging and next-generation technologies such as artificial intelligence, data science, robotics, computational linguistics and cyber-physical systems. This is going to be an exclusive campus for AI+ courses in the country.
HRD, IT, and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh reviewed the construction plans for the prestigious campus in Amaravati. BITS representatives—Siddhartha Banerjee, N Chennaveer, and BS Sahani—met the minister at his residence in Undavalli on Friday and presented detailed designs for the AI-focused institution.
The Amaravati campus will be developed in two phases, with capacity for nearly 7,000 students. An investment of around ₹1,000 crore is planned over five years to build world-class academic infrastructure, laboratories, research facilities, and student amenities. The project aligns with chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's vision to promote next-generation technologies and transform Amaravati into a major education and innovation hub. Construction has already begun.
The campus will adopt environmentally sustainable practices, including green building standards and renewable energy. It is planned as the country's first dedicated AI-focused campus.
Beyond core technology programmes, interdisciplinary courses will link AI with agriculture, climate studies, and healthcare. After reviewing the plans, Minister Lokesh expressed satisfaction and urged BITS Pilani to expedite construction so the campus could open at the earliest.
