AP govt unveils Pashu Kisan Credit Card scheme to boost livestock farming

Vijayawada: In a significant move to strengthen the rural economy and empower livestock farmers in the state, the govt has introduced the Pashu Kisan Credit Card (PKCC) scheme. This enables farmers engaged in rearing cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, pigs and poultry to avail loans at concessional interest rates, thus reducing dependence on private money lenders who charge exorbitant interest, aiming to improve the financial stability of livestock farmers across the state.Under the PKCC scheme, eligible farmers can obtain loans of up to Rs 1.60 lakh without collateral at an interest rate of 7%. Additionally, loans of up to Rs 3 lakh can be availed as per bank norms. Farmers who repay their loans within one year will benefit from a 3% interest subsidy, effectively bringing down the interest rate to just 4%.The scheme covers a wide range of beneficiaries, including farmers owning or leasing land, as well as members of self-help groups. Applicants are required to visit their nearest bank branch and submit the PKCC application along with necessary documents such as an Aadhaar card, land records, livestock details, a passport-size photograph, and a certificate issued by a veterinary officer.Speaking about the initiative, animal husbandry director Dr T Damodara Naidu urged farmers to take full advantage of the scheme. He emphasised that PKCC would enable farmers to invest in livestock, ensure better feed management and adopt improved animal husbandry practices.He also directed the field-level staff of the animal husbandry department to create awareness among farmers about the scheme. Officials opined that widespread adoption of PKCC will enhance income levels, promote financial self-reliance and contribute significantly to the overall development of rural livelihoods in the state.
