Woman sets herself ablaze

GORAKHPUR: A 31 years old woman committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on Sunday night allegedly over harassment for dowry.
Poonam Gupta was married to Manoj Gupta, a resident of Mahua in Maharajganj a year back. Two months before, she left her in-laws house and started living in his father's house at Madhopur in Campierganj. On Sunday night, she set herself afire after pouring kerosene.
Her family members opened the door of her room and rushed Poonam to hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Her brother Krishna Mohan said that Poonam was a victim of dowry greed. Mental torture by her husband and in-laws for dowry forced her to take the extreme step. On Sunday evening, she became disturbed after talking to her husband on phone. Heated argument between the couple continued for half-an-hour. "I'll lodge a complaint against her husband and in-laws for torturing her mentally. Just after six months of marriage, her in-laws and husband started harassing and torturing her mentally and physically for dowry," he said
The body was sent for postmortem examination.
Police have informed Poonam's in-laws about the incident.
