UP: Woman inspector shunted over ‘moral policing’ charges; viral video shows inappropriate questioning of siblings

VARANASI: Mau women police station in-charge inspector Manju Singh was removed and attached to police office on Tuesday after a video went viral of her questioning a young man and his two sisters at a park and verifying their relationship as part of Mission Shakti campaign.

Mau SP Elamaran G said on Tuesday that a departmental probe had been ordered into the matter and action was taken against Singh because her style of questioning the youth and the girls accompanying him was inappropriate. Mau police also said they were committed to protecting the dignity of citizens.


The woman inspector came under the radar of senior officials after a video of her questioning the youth and his sisters went viral on social media.

The video showed the inspector arriving at a park near Sheetla temple in Mau three days ago.

On noticing a boy leaving the park with two girls, she stopped them and questioned how they were related. When they informed her that they were siblings, she asked them to call up their father to verify their claim. They called their father and handed over the phone to the woman official, who started advising him not to allow his children to step out without guardians.

The woman inspector went to the park with a team of several policewomen under the Mission Shakti campaign. Other women personnel following her were also seeking identity, phone numbers, names of parents and other details from visitors.
