Gorakhpur: In a major push towards smart urban infrastructure, Gorakhpur is witnessing the development of a network of smart roads under the Chief Minister Green Road Infrastructure Development (CM Grid) scheme, an ambitious initiative guided by CM Yogi Adityanath.
Officials said projects worth Rs97.68 crore are currently underway in two phases, while an additional Rs242.22 crore has been sanctioned for six projects in the third and supplementary phases. In total, the city has received nearly Rs340 crore under the scheme so far.
The first phase, covering three roads in Rapti Nagar area, is nearing completion with over 90% of the work finished. The second phase, involving five key stretches in and around Golghar, is progressing steadily.
Municipal commissioner Gaurav Sogarwal said the smart roads are being designed to minimise repeated digging and ensure pedestrian safety. The features include dedicated utility ducts for underground pipelines, stormwater drainage systems, improved street lighting, and well-developed footpaths. Existing trees along the roads are being preserved to maintain greenery.
In the third phase, six additional roads have been identified, with the tendering process underway. Officials added that the utility duct system is expected to generate revenue for the municipal corporation, as service providers will pay for its use.
